Fees

While it is not always possible to depart from traditional “billable” hour fee arrangements, private businesses and their owners generally prefer “value added” fee arrangements for specialized tax legal services, with legal fees commensurate with the savings and results obtained, as billable hour arrangements can result in higher legal fees for services obtaining lower tax savings and mediocre results.  For practical reasons, our value added fee arrangements still have regard to time spent on a matter, although the amount of time spent is generally secondary to the results obtained and savings produced for Alberta businesses and their owners.

In general, value added billing arrangements do not work as well for Alberta businesses with low incomes and asset values, as potential tax savings in those circumstances are outside of the scope of our specialized tax law practice.  In addition, value added billing arrangements do not work as well for representational work with the Canada Revenue Agency, and unless the reassessed amounts are material to support traditional billable hour arrangements, such matters are also outside of the scope of our specialized tax law practice.

Our value added billing arrangements are intended to match our fees with higher tax savings and commercial results, having regard to our aims to maintain a cost competitive advantage with other professionals offering similar high quality tax law services and to produce material tax savings for Alberta businesses and their owners in excess of the cost of our services, thereby allowing for a “win-win” result.
